About Stephen P. Hurley

Steve Hurley represents businesses and individuals who are under investigation or have been accused of a crime. He has successfully represented clients in investigations by the SEC, FTC, OCC, FDIC, IRS, HHS, EPA, OSHA, FBI, DOT, DOD, USFWS, DEA, and state law enforcement agencies. He has been named as one of Wisconsin's top defense and trial lawyers on numerous occasions.

U.S. News and World Reports ranks his firm, of which he is a founding member, as Tier 1 for its criminal defense practice. Among many honors, Steve was elected a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and his peers have named him one of the Top Ten lawyers in Wisconsin each year since 2006 for Superlawyers® magazine. Since 1995, The Best Lawyers in America® has recognized his defense work. Since 1987, he has been an adjunct professor of law at the University of Wisconsin Law School, where he regularly teaches judges, lawyers, and law students about criminal law, evidence, and trial advocacy.

"The greatest accomplishment is to avoid your client being charged; and, if charged, to make the matter go away without a trial," Steve tells the lawyers he trains and counsels. The only way to avoid a charge or a trial, however, is to make the government fearful of losing. That can't be done if you haven't tried a case in a while."

Steve has served on numerous professional and philanthropic boards in addition to teaching. He received the Charles I. Goldberg Distinguished Service Award from the Wisconsin Law Foundation in 2015 for his long record of service to both the legal profession and the public.
