This questions was asked in our subreddit:
“
Our apartment building has very heavy fire doors without windows in them. My husband was taking out the garbage and opened the door outward. Apparently it hit one of the other tenants who was going to open the door on the other side and injured her finger. Unfortunately, she got irate and he didn’t want to engage with her because of that, but it was obviously an accident. We don’t know if it’s a sprain or a bruise or something more serious.
She was yelling about pursuing legal action. If that happens, I’m not really sure how to proceed. I read that renters insurance, which we have, covers injuries like this in one’s apartment, but not in common areas. Will we be personally liable for paying her should we be found at fault?”
